Morris Dance

Our approach

Morris – vigorous traditional group dances from many parts of England

Morris dances are performed with energy and precision in teams of five to eight dancers. There are several styles to choose from:

Cotswold Morris.   Teams of six, wearing bells on the legs, wielding handkerchiefs or sticks. Varied steps and figures

Border Morris. Teams of six or eight, wearing jackets decorated with strips of cloth. Simple stepping, emphasis on figures and stick-clashing

North-West Morris. Teams of eight. Simple ‘stamping’ steps. Dances are designed to be done as a procession

Sword dances. Rings of five or eight dancers, joined together by holding 'swords’ (not sharp!), under and over which they twist

All the dances are enjoyable and satisfying to learn, developing spatial awareness and teamwork. All lend themselves to invention – create your own new Morris dance!
